What happens if you mix them
A JIC male has no sealing surface for an ORB port — the threads match, the seal doesn't exist. The result weeps at the port and gets 'fixed' with ever-more torque until the boss cracks.

How do I know if my port is ORB or NPT?
Straight threads with a machined flat spotface = ORB; tapered threads = NPT. A straight fitting will sit square in an ORB port at finger depth.
Do ORB fittings need torque?
Yes — to spec, with the O-ring lightly oiled. Overtorquing extrudes the ring and creates the leak you were avoiding.
