R1 carries one wire braid, R2 carries two — and roughly twice the working pressure at every size. R1 belongs on returns and drains; R2 is the default pressure-line braid hose. The price difference is small; the rating difference isn't.

What happens if you mix them
R1 on a pressure circuit is the classic parts-store fatality: it holds on day one and fails on the hot, hard day. Check circuit pressure against the size-specific chart, not the hose family name.

Can I just always buy R2?
For braid-hose duties, that's a defensible one-hose policy — R2 covers everything R1 does with margin. Suction still needs R4, and high-impulse mains still need spiral.
