JIC vs ORFS vs Flat-Face: Choosing Hydraulic Fitting Ends

A deep comparison of the three fitting families on modern equipment — how each seals, where each wins, conversion strategy, and the mistakes that mix them badly.

Walk down a line of equipment built across four decades and you'll find three fitting philosophies living side by side: the metal cone of JIC 37°, the elastomer face of ORFS, and the metric flat-face variants that look like ORFS but aren't. Understanding why each exists tells you which to use — and which mistake you're about to make.

Three ways to stop oil

JIC 37° (SAE J514) seals by wedging a female flare against a male cone — metal deforming slightly against metal. It's simple, cheap, and nothing can fall out of it. Its weakness is the same metal contact: every over-torque, re-assembly, and vibration cycle work-hardens and scores the sealing band. A JIC joint that's been apart twenty times seals worse than one that's been apart twice.

ORFS (SAE J1453) moved the sealing job from metal to a 90-durometer O-ring compressed between two flat faces. The elastomer forgives vibration, re-assembly, and minor surface sins; the trade is cost and a consumable ring. OEMs adopted it in the '80s and '90s because warranty leak claims collapsed wherever it went — which is why the newer the excavator, the more ORFS you'll find on it.

Metric flat-face variants apply the same face-seal idea with metric threads — common on Japanese and European machines. The faces look identical to ORFS. The threads are not, and forcing the two together galls both. Full details in the flat-face variants guide.

The honest rule from the counter: match the machine. A mixed-thread machine is a maintenance tax that compounds — every future hose costs an identification step, an adapter, or a mistake. Whole-machine conversions to ORFS pay off on high-vibration equipment with chronic leaks; drive-by conversions of single circuits mostly create hybrid confusion.

Conversion strategy that works

  1. Convert by circuit, not by fitting. Both ends of a hose and its ports move together.
  2. Use proper ORFS-to-JIC adapters at component ports you can't re-port — never "make it fit."
  3. Stock rings where the machine lives. An ORFS machine without spare face seals is a JIC machine with extra steps. We sell O-ring kits for exactly this.
  4. Label the oddballs. One metric flat-face circuit on an otherwise ORFS machine deserves a tag on the hose. Your future self will pay for the marker pen many times over.

The mistakes we un-make weekly

  • The missing ring. An ORFS joint assembled without its O-ring will pass a gentle test and leak at working pressure. If a face-seal fitting leaks, check the ring before the torque.
  • JIC re-torque escalation. A weeping JIC gets another quarter turn, then another, until the flare cracks. The correct sequence is: crack it open, inspect the cone for scoring, replace the damaged half. Torque is not a bandage.
  • "It threads, so it fits." A 9/16-18 thread is a JIC -6 and an ORFS -4. The thread identification method exists because thread size alone is genuinely ambiguous.
  • Metric assumed inch. If a "flat-face" nut won't start smoothly by hand, stop. Measure the pitch in millimeters.

What we'd put on a new machine

If we were plumbing a machine from scratch today: ORFS on every pressure circuit that vibrates or gets serviced, O-ring boss at every component port, JIC only where cost rules and cycles are gentle. Which is, not coincidentally, roughly what the OEMs converged on.
