Hose specification

SAE 100R4 — Suction & Return

SAE 100R4 is the suction and return hose: its wire helix keeps the tube from collapsing under pump-inlet vacuum, which is the failure pressure hose can't resist. Use it between reservoir and pump, never as a pressure line.

SAE 100R4 — Suction & Return — FAQs

Why can't I use pressure hose for suction?

Under inlet vacuum a non-helix hose can collapse internally, starving the pump — which cavitates and destroys it. Suction needs the R4 helix.

What causes a whining pump after a hose change?

Often a collapsed or undersized suction line. Check that R4 of the correct diameter was used and that clamps aren't crushing it.
